How it's done: Silica in the tread compounds gives extra durability. Sweeping grooves escort water from under the tread for grip in wet weather, and sipes chomp through snow and ice for winter traction. The center rib and large shoulder blocks give stable steering response. In the center tread, interlocking blocks minimize noise while improving wear and off-roading traction. Inside, steel belts give stability that supports handling, while a polyester body stiffens the sidewalls and enhances ride quality.
